Who says you have to put up with eczema for the rest of your life? Or, for that matter, use expensive and potentially harmful chemicals to get rid of it? An article in Homeo-Pathic demonstrates how to make home remedies for the skin condition using good old apple cider vinegar.
Also called dermatitis, eczema is rooted in a number of causes, such as inflammation. However, the results are fairly similar.
In eczema, parts of the skin of will dry out. These parts will also grow much thicker than normal. The combination of dryness and density makes the affected skin very irritable.
While it is not dangerous, eczema can be stressful for patients, especially if the ugly-looking and very irritable patches are visible to other people.
There are conventional means of treating the condition. But these methods can be fairly expensive. Furthermore, the pharmaceutical drugs used in the treatment process have negating side effects like burning and stinging sensations, the last thing you want to feel on skin that already has eczema to deal with. As the name suggests, apple cider vinegar is made from apple cider that has been alcoholically fermented using bacteria and yeast. It is used in food preservatives, marinades, salad dressings, and vinaigrette.
In addition to its use as a cooking ingredient, the vinegar has also been employed as a folk remedy for various skin diseases. It is considered to be an excellent natural treatment for the symptoms of eczema.
Remedies based on apple cider vinegar take two forms. There are those that can be consumed as medicines, and there are the external ones that are directly applied on the affected skin.
If you are suffering from eczema, you could mix a very mild tonic that is very easy to make. Add up to two tablespoons of apple cider to a glass of water. Drink this every day and watch your skin improve.
Even limited to just a single tablespoon of vinegar, the tonic will have a very strong taste. If it is too much for you, you can add just enough honey to make it more palatable. Honey also brings benefits to the skin, although not specifically to eczema.
Another way apple cider vinegar can benefit eczema patients is through the small amounts of potassium found in the vinegar. Eczema is in part caused by a shortage of this important mineral, so eating the right foods will help clear the condition.
Apple cider vinegar can also be used as a bath solution. Mix half a cup of the vinegar and a one-third cup of cold-compressed oil. The oil should be either safflower or sunflower. Add the combination to the water in a bathtub, mix it up, and then enjoy a good long soak.
The bath treatment will replenish the moisture levels in your skin. It will also encourage dead skin cells to slough off faster. Finally, it will prevent the dead cells from coming back to plague you.
Before you use either remedy, there are a number of things you must keep in mind about apply cider vinegar. First, any kind of vinegar is highly acidic, so you should always dilute it before touching it.
Vinegar also has chromium, a mineral that can disrupt insulin levels. Diabetics should always be careful about resorting to it.
Finally, vinegar can affect the bones. So anyone with osteoporosis or a similar problem with their bones should not risk apple cider vinegar.
